Trans Kids In Florida Suffer From Politics

By: Rev. Craig Cranston

The Tampa Bay Times reported on August 31, 2022, that, “the current political debate about treatment for gender dysphoria is already having a chilling effect on those seeking care.” The report then went on to describe how children were being denied care by doctors and hospitals, “over fear of future sanctions.”

So let’s be clear about a few things:

  • Medical care for anyone should not be determined (or thwarted) by political systems, but by trained medical professionals.
  • As reported by the Times, the care typically provided to trans youth has, “been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, among other national health organizations.” In other words, trained medical professionals led by science, not the whims of the shifting political narrative.

Floridians should be standing up to protest and rebuke these kinds of developments. Christians definitely should. Why? Because Jesus was clear that the community’s job was to protect the most vulnerable among us. You don’t protect, nurture and support children by preventing them care medical professionals have, for a long while, said is appropriate and necessary.
